Today after our Organisational Behaviour paper, i stumbled upon a conversation with my vegetarian friend. I asked her, why did you choose to gravitate towards being a vegetarian? She said: " Well, 50% of it is because i did not want to gain weight and the efforts of my diet would have gone to waste. & the other 50% is because she hopes that it will reduce the killing of animals." Now, what do you think about the cartoon above ? In my opinion, is that we are over doing stuff. Even though we have no fishing laws towards maintaining sustainability in Singapore, we can make a difference by choosing what we buy.
What is bycatch? Bycatch refers to different species, undersized individuals of the target species or juveniles of the target species. What does bycatch include? It includes beautiful marine life. And bycatch is what is discarded. Fisheries discard sea turtles, dolphins and any other fish that was caught unintentionally.

These are some figures and facts that should trigger guilt in you and awaken the humanity in us. As I aspire to be a chef, 2 chefs that has played a huge role in triggering the passion in me and whom i learnt a lot from either by watching videos, or hands on has something to say about eating Shark fins.
"If i have the power, I will remove shark fins from all the restaurants in the world." said David Senia, Executive Chef of Capella Singapore.

- Over 300,000 small whales, dolphins, and porpoises die from entanglement in fishing nets each year, making bycatch the single largest cause of mortality for small cetaceans and pushing several species to the verge of extinction.
- According to some scientific estimates, as many as 250,000 endangered loggerhead turtles and critically endangered leatherback turtles are caught annually on longlines set for tuna, swordfish, and other fish, with thousands more killed in shrimp trawls.
- 89% of hammerhead sharks and 80 per cent of thresher and white sharks have disappeared from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean in the last 18 years, largely due to bycatch.
- Shrimp trawlers catch as many as 35 million juvenile red snappers each year in the Gulf of Mexico, enough to have an impact on the population.
- Billions of corals, sponges, starfish, and other invertebrates are caught as bycatch every year

This is just a short video and an insight to the extent of cruelty because humans are willing to pay.
Warning: Video contains animal abuse, cruelty and sorts.

I can say I have watched almost all the videos of Gordon Ramsay and it has occupied a fair amount of my knowledge on food today. Moving on, over fishing and discarding of bycatch is a problem. However, sustainability applies to all live stocks, not only fish.
I know about "Foie Gras; French for "Fat Liver" which is a food product made from the liver of a Duck or Goose that has been specially fattened" The disturbing fact where cruelty kicks in is how they fatten the livers of the duck, by "Gavage" which in layman terms refers to force feeding Ducks and Goose by means of a plastic tube passed through the mouth into the stomach.

What's my point? What's the message that I am trying to put forward? I hope every person that aspires to be a chef, will do their part and educate themselves and others about sustainability. Why sustainability? Back to my purpose of doing this post, while having a conversation with me vegetarian friend. I was trying to convince her that "Yes, caring for the animals is right" And i support that, but in this industry, we need to work with live stock. However, the whole point of sustainability is we take what we need because the least you can do when you kill an animal is eat it. On top of that, we have to treat our food with respect and make sure that the environment that Chickens, Pigs and Cows live in are humane and not overcrowded, just for the sake of profit.
This is just a video of an example of inhumane living space for live stock. And this does not only happen for pigs, it is the same for every other commercial live stock like Chickens and Cows.

I shall end my post with a few humble advice. I sincerely urge whoever is reading this to share and spread the message. You do not need to convert to being a Vegetarian. You just need to know where your food comes from and make sure you are supporting the right kind of agriculture, farming, fishing and every sort of practice that is used to raise the food that you eat. Thank you for taking time to read these and I am sure that this sustainability can be improved.
I do not own any of the pictures or videos above and i have stated the sources that i extracted any information from. I uploaded these videos to support my point and to provide an insight to what i saw and what made me want to share all these.
